Face Your Waste is an initiative of Mindarie Regional Council (MRC), one of Western Australia’s largest waste management authorities. The MRC manage the disposal of about 250,000 tonnes of waste generated each year by people living in its seven government localities (City of Joondalup, City of Perth, City of Stirling, City of Vincent, City of Wanneroo, Town of Cambridge, and Town of Victoria Park).
The MRC operates the Tamala Park waste disposal facility, approximately 30km north of the Perth CBD. This facility provides the general public with comprehensive refuse disposal services via its landfill, a recycling drop off centre, and a Reuse shop (tip shop). The MRC’s operations also include a landfill gas fired power station and a Resource Recovery Facility (RRF). Harmful methane gas is extracted from the landfill and is used by the onsite power station to produce electricity – ‘green energy’ – which is supplied to the state power grid for on-sale to commercial customers. The RRF, based in Neerabup, converts household waste into market quality soil enhancer (compost), reducing the amount of waste currently sent to landfill.
In an effort to minimise waste to landfill and encourage a culture of waste minimisation, the MRC conducts a range of educational programs for schools and the community. These include demonstrations and workshops on composting and other waste matters, tours of the landfill and RRF, information stands at events, and battery collection programs.
